What a brand search can and cannot settle

Typing a name into a search box gets you two kinds of page: the company's own marketing, and articles ranking it against others. The first is written to sell. A large share of the second earns a commission when you click through and buy, which is ordinary and legal but means the ranking is not neutral.

You can usually tell within seconds. Hover the outgoing links and look for tracking parameters, look for a discount code unique to that page, and see whether the article ever names a real drawback. A list where every entry is excellent and the differences are vague is a commission page.

The footer and the terms page carry the real information

Scroll to the bottom of any seller's site and look for a trading company name and a registration number. Then open the terms and find the governing law clause, which states which country's rules the contract is read under and where a dispute would be heard.

That single clause reframes everything above it. A generous guarantee written on a sales page is worth what you can enforce, and enforcement across borders on a small order is not realistic for anybody. It also tells you whether the UK consumer protections you might be assuming are actually in play.

Two brands that look like rivals sometimes name the same operating company in their own legal text. When they do, buying from both is not spreading your risk, because there is only one company, one set of exclusions and one place your money lands.

The six things that actually differ between sellers

Front-page claims about quality and speed are near-identical everywhere in this market, largely because many shops resell the same wholesale supply. These six are what a shop genuinely controls, and they are what you should compare.

• The currency you are charged in, and whether a currency switcher exists at all.
• Whether the headline price exists as a real package in the basket, or is a unit rate reachable only at the top of the ladder.
• The minimum order, which is the price of finding out whether the service works.
• What the checkout asks for: a username, or a login and a two-factor code.
• Where the refill and refund terms are written, and whether the policy page agrees with the sales page.

Most of the well-known shops in this market price in US dollars with no sterling option. If you hold a UK card, that means the figure on the button is not the figure that leaves your account. Your bank sets the conversion rate on the day and many UK cards add a non-sterling transaction fee on top.

Testing a seller without much exposure

Whatever brand you end up on, make the first order the smallest one they sell and pay with a method that has a dispute process. What you are buying at that point is information, not followers.
