Coin and follow-for-follow apps: what you actually get

These apps run a swap. You follow accounts inside the app to earn coins, then spend the coins to have your own account shown to other users of the app. Everybody involved is there to be followed, not to read anything.

The number goes up, which is why the model survives. What comes with it is an audience made entirely of people playing the same game, most of whom unfollow you within days once they have collected what they wanted. Your following count climbs at the same rate, which leaves the profile looking worse than when you started.

There is a second cost that is easy to miss. Following hundreds of accounts quickly is exactly the pattern automated-behaviour checks are built to notice, and the account carrying that risk is yours, not the app's.

Tracker apps: useful, but you do not need one

Follower tracker apps tell you who unfollowed you, who does not follow you back, and who never engages. That information is genuinely interesting and it is the one honest category in this market.

The problem is the price of admission. Almost all of them ask you to log in through their own screen, which hands a third party full access to your account so it can read a list. That is a poor trade for a piece of information Instagram will give you directly.

Instagram's own data export, under Settings then Accounts Centre then Your information and permissions, includes your followers and following as files with dates on them. Save one today, save another in a month, compare the two, and you have the same answer without anyone else ever touching the account.

The apps that are simply after your login

The third group looks like either of the first two and exists to collect credentials. The tell is what they ask for and what they promise. Any app offering free followers, a generator, or a large number in exchange for signing in is asking for the account itself.

Once someone has the login they can post, message your followers, change the recovery email and lock you out. Recovering an account after that is slow and sometimes impossible, and it costs far more than the follower count was ever worth.

The rule that keeps you safe is short. Nothing that adds followers to an Instagram account requires being inside it. A username is public information and it is all a delivery service needs. A password is only ever needed by something that intends to act as you.

What raising a follower count actually involves

There are only two honest levers. One is publishing things people want to follow, consistently enough that the account keeps getting shown to new people. The other is buying a starting number so the page stops reading as abandoned while the first lever gets going.

The second one is narrow and worth being precise about. A follower order changes the impression a stranger forms in the first second on your profile. It does not create reach, it does not put your posts in front of more people, and it will not start a snowball on its own.

That first second still matters more than most people expect. A visitor sees the number before they read the bio or look at a single post, and a count in double figures sends them away before anything you have made gets a chance.

There is nothing to download here and no account to create. You pick a quantity, paste your public Instagram username, and pay through PayPal in pounds. No password is ever requested, at any point.

Picking a size that suits the account

Keep it proportionate to what you already hold. The point is to look like a page that has been running, not a page that had an unusual Tuesday.

A hundred is the minimum and the right step for a page in double figures, because it moves the count into three figures and stops it reading as empty. Five hundred suits a page with a few hundred already. Two and a half thousand suits an account that wants to read as established at a glance.

The size that goes wrong is the one that ignores the account entirely. Ninety followers becoming fifty thousand overnight tells its own story, and nothing you post afterwards puts that back.

How to check what you bought

Screenshot the count on the day the order completes, then open six or seven of the new followers at random rather than the first few in the list. You are not looking for perfect accounts, because ordinary people have thin profiles too. You are looking for signs of a history.

Wait a fortnight and look at the count again. What survives two weeks is the number you actually bought, and that figure is what should decide whether you order again and at what size.

This is also why the small sizes exist. A hundred followers is few enough to inspect by hand, which is more information than any sales page can give you.
