The remover is on your own followers list. Open the Instagram app, tap your profile picture to go to your profile, tap the Followers number at the top, then find the account you want gone. A Remove button sits to the right of their name. Tap it, confirm, and they are no longer following you.

You can also do it from their profile. Open the account, and if they follow you, the option to remove them appears in the menu on their page. Both routes do exactly the same thing, so use whichever is quicker for you.

The search box at the top of the followers list matters more than people expect. On an account with a few thousand followers, scrolling to find one name is slow, and typing the first few letters of the username is instant. Does the person get told you removed them?

Instagram does not send a notification when you remove a follower. There is no message, no alert, and nothing in their activity feed that says what happened.

They can still work it out. If they visit your profile, the button will read Follow again instead of Following, which is the same thing they would see if they had unfollowed you themselves. Someone who checks will notice; someone who does not check will never know.

Removing is also not blocking. A removed follower can still find your profile, still see your posts while the account is public, and can simply follow you again. If you want the person kept away from the account entirely, blocking is the tool for that, not removing.

Why third-party remover apps are the risky option

Almost every app that calls itself an Instagram followers remover asks you to sign in with your Instagram username and password. That is the risk, stated plainly. Handing your login to a third party gives it the ability to act as you, and Instagram treats accounts that log in through outside tools as a problem worth acting on.

The second problem is that these apps sell the one thing Instagram deliberately does not give you: a bulk remove button. Removing dozens or hundreds of followers in a burst is exactly the kind of rapid, repetitive activity that trips Instagram's action limits, and the account that gets restricted is yours, not the app's.

Every follower you remove takes one off your follower count immediately. There is no way to remove someone and keep the number, and the count does not recover on its own.

Removing four hundred spam accounts drops your count by four hundred that day, and if you were close to a threshold that mattered to you, you are now below it.
